# Mercor AI interview questions: what happens, and how to practise

Canonical URL: https://career1.ai/mercor-ai-interview-questions · Publisher: Career1 (Answerflix Ltd)

Mercor screens every candidate with a recorded AI interview: its documentation calls it the standard and only method for screening. Mercor publishes most of the rules for it, which is unusual and worth reading before you start: roughly twenty minutes, on camera, with retakes and a free practice run.

## What Mercor publishes about its AI interview

Career1 is an independent AI interview platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Mercor. Mercor is a trademark of its owner. Every line below comes from Mercor's own talent documentation, linked beside it with the date we read it. The questions further down were written by Career1 as typical examples: they are not Mercor's questions, and Mercor asks candidates not to share its actual questions publicly. Mercor does not publish a pass mark or how its model grades an answer, and Career1 has no way to know.

## Mercor AI interview questions, by category

Mercor generates its questions from each candidate's résumé and the job description, and asks candidates not to share the real ones, so this is not a leaked list. Career1 wrote these as typical examples of a short recorded interview about your own experience, each with what a strong answer shows.

### Your background, in your own words

- **Tell me about the work on your resume you know best.** What a strong answer shows: That you chose the thing you can go three questions deep on, rather than the most senior-sounding line on the page.
- **What were you actually responsible for in that role?** What a strong answer shows: A boundary: what was yours to decide, what you inherited, and what somebody else owned.
- **Which piece of your work would you point to if someone doubted your expertise?** What a strong answer shows: One concrete example with a result attached, chosen quickly, which is what genuine experience sounds like.
- **What changed because of something you did in the last year?** What a strong answer shows: An outcome outside your own to-do list: a decision that got made, a cost that fell, a problem that stopped recurring.
- **Why did you move from the way you used to work to the way you work now?** What a strong answer shows: That your habits came from experience rather than fashion, with the moment that changed your mind.

### Depth in your field

- **Explain something in your field that people outside it usually get wrong.** What a strong answer shows: Real command of the subject, plus the ability to correct a misconception without condescending.
- **What mistake do beginners in your area keep making, and why?** What a strong answer shows: A diagnosis rather than a complaint: why the wrong approach is tempting, and what makes the right one harder.
- **How do you check that your own work is correct?** What a strong answer shows: A method you actually use, and a time it caught something you would otherwise have shipped.
- **Where does the standard approach in your field break down?** What a strong answer shows: Knowing the limits of the tools you recommend, which is what separates practice from theory.
- **What would you need to know before giving an answer you would stand behind?** What a strong answer shows: That you separate what you know from what you would have to check, instead of filling the gap with confidence.

### Reasoning and problem solving

- **How would you break down a problem you have never seen before?** What a strong answer shows: A sequence you can name, and evidence you have used it on something real rather than describing it in the abstract.
- **Two sources tell you different things. How do you decide which to trust?** What a strong answer shows: Weighing how each was produced rather than which agrees with you, and saying what would settle it.
- **How do you work out whether a problem is worth solving at all?** What a strong answer shows: Cost against consequence, and the willingness to recommend doing nothing when that is the right answer.
- **Estimate something you cannot look up, and show your working.** What a strong answer shows: The steps out loud, the assumptions named, and a sanity check at the end. The number matters less than the route.
- **What would change your mind about a conclusion you reached this morning?** What a strong answer shows: That your conclusions are attached to evidence, and you can say which evidence would overturn them.

### Language and clarity

- **Summarise your last project in three sentences.** What a strong answer shows: Compression. What it was, what you did, what came of it, with nothing that does not earn its place.
- **Now explain the same thing to someone with no background in it.** What a strong answer shows: That you can drop the vocabulary without losing the meaning, which is the harder version of the same answer.
- **Give me the one sentence you would want a hiring manager to remember.** What a strong answer shows: A claim about you that is specific enough to be checked, rather than a list of adjectives.
- **Take a piece of jargon you use every day and say it in plain words.** What a strong answer shows: Understanding rather than vocabulary, and the habit of noticing when the other person has lost the thread.

### Judgement calls

- **You are asked to do something faster than you think it can be done well. What do you say?** What a strong answer shows: Saying it early with options and a recommendation, rather than agreeing and delivering something you would not defend.
- **You find an error in work that has already been delivered. What do you do?** What a strong answer shows: Reporting it yourself, quickly, with the size of the problem and the fix, instead of hoping nobody notices.
- **You disagree with how a task has been specified. How do you handle it?** What a strong answer shows: Asking what the specification is for before arguing with it, then committing once the decision is made.
- **You are running out of time on a task. What do you drop first?** What a strong answer shows: A priority call you can justify, and telling whoever depends on the dropped part before they find out themselves.

## Why a twenty-minute recorded interview is unforgiving

### What you say becomes a transcript

Mercor says an AI interviewer asks the questions and generates a transcript of the answers. A half-finished sentence stays half finished, because nothing goes back to fix it for you.

### Twenty minutes is only a handful of answers

Mercor says most interviews take about twenty minutes. One rambling reply costs a real share of the evidence you get to give.

### The setup is part of the test

Mercor asks for your full face visible and your voice clear throughout, in a quiet place, on a supported browser. A bad microphone is the most avoidable way to lose an attempt.

## How to prepare

1. **Spend the practice attempt first.** Mercor says there is a free practice interview you can take as many times as you like and that it does not affect future opportunities. There is no reason to spend a real attempt finding out where the buttons are.
2. **Get the boring setup exactly right.** Mercor names Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer, says Firefox and mobile browsers are not supported, and asks you to enable and test the camera and microphone before starting. Headphones and an external microphone are recommended.
3. **Build four or five stories from your résumé.** Mercor builds its questions from your résumé, so the part of you an interviewer can verify is a specific project on it: what the problem was, what you did, what changed. Say each one out loud and cut it until it lands in about ninety seconds, then practise the follow-up question you would least like to be asked.

## What a strong twenty-minute answer sounds like

### A first sentence that answers the question

Then the detail. A wind-up that arrives at the point in sentence four reads as padding in a transcript.

### Your own decisions, named

Which call was yours, what you chose against, and what happened as a result. That is the part nobody else could have said for you.

### One number you can stand behind

A figure you could defend if asked where it came from beats three impressive ones you cannot.

### Words you would use with a colleague

Jargon in a transcript hides whether you understand the thing. Plain language proves it.

### A clean stop

Finish, and stop. Filling silence after a complete answer is where good answers get diluted.

### Practice you can repeat privately

Career1's practice interview is private, has no video and no score, gives written feedback, and you can take one every seven days. It is never shared with companies.

## Questions people ask

### Is Career1 part of Mercor?

No. Career1 is an independent AI interview platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Mercor. Mercor is a trademark of its owner. This page exists because candidates preparing for a recorded AI interview need accurate information about it, checked against Mercor's own documentation, and somewhere honest to practise out loud.

### How long is the Mercor AI interview?

Mercor's talent documentation says most interviews require approximately 20 minutes, although some may be shorter or longer. You do not have to take it immediately: Mercor suggests choosing a time that works best for you, somewhere quiet with a stable connection, on a computer with a working camera and microphone.

### What questions does the Mercor AI interview ask?

Mercor says its AI interviewer generates questions based on your résumé and the job description. Some interviews are technical and go deep into your prior experience; others test language or reasoning skills, and some include a whiteboard or screen sharing. Because the questions come from your own résumé, the best preparation is explaining your own projects out loud.

### Are these the real Mercor interview questions?

No. Career1 wrote them as typical examples of a short recorded interview about your own experience. Mercor generates its questions from each candidate's résumé and the job description, and asks candidates not to share specific questions or screenshots, so a list of real Mercor questions would not match yours even if one existed.

### Can you retake the Mercor AI interview?

Yes, within limits. Mercor says you can retake an official interview up to three times across all applications that use it, from the Assessments tab of your dashboard. If every attempt is used and a technical problem occurred, you can email support with evidence to request a one-time retake, though approval is not guaranteed.

### Is there a Mercor practice interview?

Yes. Mercor says its practice interview is free, not tied to any application, does not affect future opportunities, and can be taken as many times as you like. Practice interviews are not shared with any companies. Taking it before your first real attempt is the cheapest preparation there is, because it uses none of your three retakes.

### Does the Mercor AI interview record you?

Yes. Mercor keeps the video and audio recording and an AI-generated transcript of official interviews, to evaluate your candidacy and recommend your profile to potential employers. It says it does not sell interview data, and that it cannot share recordings or transcripts with you, because they are stored internally and used solely for evaluation.

### Can you use ChatGPT during the Mercor interview?

Only for small things. Mercor's LLM usage policy allows checking grammar and diction and subtly refining phrasing, as long as the ideas and structure remain your own. Its interview FAQ says not to use language models to compose your responses, rate model responses, generate rationales or evaluate code, and the policy says evidently AI-produced submissions will be flagged.

### How does Mercor score the interview?

Mercor does not publish how its model grades an answer, or a pass mark, so Career1 cannot tell you either. It does say the AI interviewer evaluates your performance for the listing, and that its AI recommends candidates using the résumé, interview performance and public profiles such as GitHub. Human contractors may review interview performance to improve the models, not to make hiring decisions.

### How long does Mercor take to get back to you after the AI interview?

Mercor says it usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks to hear whether you have moved on to the next stage, mainly because of the volume of applications. In the meantime it suggests applying to other open roles on the platform. It also says it cannot share specific feedback on a rejection.

### Do I need a camera for the Mercor interview?

Yes. Mercor asks you to use a computer with a working camera and microphone, test both before starting, and keep your full face visible and your voice clear throughout. The start button stays inactive until the camera and microphone checks pass, and headphones with an external microphone are recommended.

### Can I do the Mercor AI interview on my phone?

No. Mercor's browser guidance says mobile browsers are not supported, and neither is Firefox. It recommends the latest Google Chrome and supports the latest Microsoft Edge and Safari, on a computer. If the AI stops responding, Mercor suggests waiting 30 to 60 seconds, refreshing, and turning off VPNs and ad blockers.

### Does Mercor use my interview to train AI?

Mercor's interview FAQ says your interview data will not be employed to train AI models. Its data policy says your data is never used to train third-party large language models and that interview data does not train external AI models, while listing its own internal recommendation models among its uses of data. Both pages are quoted and linked above.

### How do you pass the Mercor AI interview?

Mercor publishes no pass mark, so the honest answer is preparation. Take the free practice interview first, get the camera, microphone and browser right, and rehearse explaining the projects on your résumé out loud, since the questions are generated from it. Keep answers clear and succinct, and avoid long silences, which Mercor says may make the AI interject.

### How can I practise talking out loud before it?

Career1's practice interview is free, about eight minutes by voice, private, with no video and no score, and written feedback afterwards. You can take one every seven days and it is never shared with companies. Career1's vetting interview is a separate single attempt with no retakes that is recorded, scored, and becomes a profile hiring companies can search, which you can hide from your dashboard.
