What is the Mercor AI interview?
The Mercor AI interview is a recorded video interview in which an AI interviewer asks questions generated from your résumé and the job description, transcribes your answers and evaluates them. Mercor says most interviews take about 20 minutes, you can retake an official interview up to three times, and its free practice interview can be taken as often as you like and is not shared with any companies. Mercor does not publish a pass mark.

What Mercor publishes about its AI interview
Career1 is an independent AI interview platform and is not affiliated with, endorsed by or connected to Mercor. Mercor is a trademark of its owner. Every line below comes from Mercor's own talent documentation, linked beside it with the date we read it. The questions further down were written by Career1 as typical examples: they are not Mercor's questions, and Mercor asks candidates not to share its actual questions publicly. Mercor does not publish a pass mark or how its model grades an answer, and Career1 has no way to know.

The questions come from your résumé
Mercor's data policy says: "Our AI interviewer generates questions based on your résumé and the job description, transcribes your responses, and evaluates your performance." The questions you get depend on what your own résumé says, which no public list can know.

The real questions are not meant to be shared
Mercor's interview FAQ says you may discuss general experiences, "however, please refrain from sharing specific questions, screenshots, or any confidential information about projects, clients, or internal materials."

What to rehearse instead
Pick the four or five things on your résumé you would most expect to be asked about, and practise explaining each out loud: the problem, what you did, what changed, and what you would do differently. Career1's practice interview reads your resume first and asks about your own projects, with a follow-up question when an answer is thin.

Can you use ChatGPT in the Mercor interview?
Only in narrow ways. Mercor's LLM usage policy draws the line, and its interview FAQ repeats it.
What is allowed
You may use a large language model to "ensure the accuracy of your grammar and diction" and to "Refine the phrasing and tone subtly, provided that the fundamental ideas and structure remain your own."

What is not
The policy prohibits using LLMs for "Assessing or evaluating the quality of responses generated by models", "Providing justifications or explanations for writing purposes" and "Predicting code behavior or runtime results". The interview FAQ adds that you should not use them "to compose your responses".

What happens if you do
The policy says: "Submissions that are evidently produced by artificial intelligence will be identified and flagged accordingly." Mercor does not publish how it detects them or what a flag leads to, and Career1 has no way to know.

The interview FAQ says "Your interview data will not be employed to train AI models". Mercor's data policy lists among its uses of data "Train our internal recommendation models, ensuring that your data is never used to train third-party large language models (LLMs)", and says "We do not utilize your interview data for the training of external AI models." Read together: no training of outside models, and Mercor's own recommendation models are named as a use of data.

Deleting it, and hiding your profile
You can request deletion from your account settings, and Mercor emails a confirmation once your account, résumé, interview and transcript are removed. It adds: "Deleting your account does not remove data from companies that may have already accessed it." Turning off the Looking for Work toggle stops your profile being shown to companies.

How Career1 handles recordings, for comparison
Career1's practice interview uses your microphone only, records no video and is never shown to a company. Career1's vetting interview records video with audio, which is never sent to OpenAI, and nothing in Career1 analyses faces, expressions, tone of voice or accent. What Mercor does not publish

A pass mark or score scale
Mercor says its AI interviewer evaluates your performance, but does not publish a score scale, a pass mark or how answers are weighted, and Career1 has no way to know them.

“The AI marks you down for saying we instead of I.”
Not in Mercor's documentation as checked on 29 September 2026. Saying clearly which part of the work was yours is good advice in any interview, but Mercor publishes no rule about pronouns.

Why a twenty-minute recorded interview is unforgiving
What you say becomes a transcript
Mercor says an AI interviewer asks the questions and generates a transcript of the answers. A half-finished sentence stays half finished, because nothing goes back to fix it for you.
Twenty minutes is only a handful of answers
Mercor says most interviews take about twenty minutes. One rambling reply costs a real share of the evidence you get to give.
The setup is part of the test
Mercor asks for your full face visible and your voice clear throughout, in a quiet place, on a supported browser. A bad microphone is the most avoidable way to lose an attempt.

Mercor says there is a free practice interview you can take as many times as you like and that it does not affect future opportunities. There is no reason to spend a real attempt finding out where the buttons are.

Mercor names Chrome, Edge or Safari on a computer, says Firefox and mobile browsers are not supported, and asks you to enable and test the camera and microphone before starting. Headphones and an external microphone are recommended.

Build four or five stories from your résumé
Mercor builds its questions from your résumé, so the part of you an interviewer can verify is a specific project on it: what the problem was, what you did, what changed. Say each one out loud and cut it until it lands in about ninety seconds, then practise the follow-up question you would least like to be asked.
What a strong twenty-minute answer sounds like
- A first sentence that answers the question
- Then the detail. A wind-up that arrives at the point in sentence four reads as padding in a transcript.
- Your own decisions, named
- Which call was yours, what you chose against, and what happened as a result. That is the part nobody else could have said for you.
- One number you can stand behind
- A figure you could defend if asked where it came from beats three impressive ones you cannot.
- Words you would use with a colleague
- Jargon in a transcript hides whether you understand the thing. Plain language proves it.
- A clean stop
- Finish, and stop. Filling silence after a complete answer is where good answers get diluted.

How long does Mercor take to get back to you after the AI interview?
Mercor says it usually takes between 2 and 4 weeks to hear whether you have moved on to the next stage, mainly because of the volume of applications. In the meantime it suggests applying to other open roles on the platform. It also says it cannot share specific feedback on a rejection.
Do I need a camera for the Mercor interview?
Yes. Mercor asks you to use a computer with a working camera and microphone, test both before starting, and keep your full face visible and your voice clear throughout. The start button stays inactive until the camera and microphone checks pass, and headphones with an external microphone are recommended.
Can I do the Mercor AI interview on my phone?
No. Mercor's browser guidance says mobile browsers are not supported, and neither is Firefox. It recommends the latest Google Chrome and supports the latest Microsoft Edge and Safari, on a computer. If the AI stops responding, Mercor suggests waiting 30 to 60 seconds, refreshing, and turning off VPNs and ad blockers.
Does Mercor use my interview to train AI?

Its data policy says your data is never used to train third-party large language models and that interview data does not train external AI models, while listing its own internal recommendation models among its uses of data. How do you pass the Mercor AI interview?
